In \’Koraal en Variaties over Forty Days and Forty Nights\’ the six variations reflect the words of the hymn. \’Variaties over Bristol\’ are based on the tune associated with \’Hark! the glad sound, the saviour comes\’, and \’Variaties over Winchester New\’ are based on the tune associated with both \’Ride on, ride on in majesty\’ and \’On Jordan\’s bank the Baptist\’s cry\’.
