Welcome to the website of Paul Ritchie Music. Here you will find attractive and accessible music for church choirs, children’s choirs, organists, and piano students.

Having over fifty years experience of singing with, training, and conducting church choirs, Paul knows how to write music which is both enjoyable to sing and a pleasure to listen to, and his experience of working with school choirs enables him to write accessible melodies well within the capabilities of young children.

His music for organists is rooted in the tradition of variation form, and he has composed several sets of variations based on hymn tunes and Genevan psalm tunes. An ongoing project involves composing preludes on hymn tunes named for saints.

Paul works as a piano teacher, and has devised a series of books taking children from their first lesson through to ABRSM Grade 1 level, using well known children’s songs, traditional folk songs, and Christmas carols from around the world.

Competitions offer welcome opportunities to compose, and from time to time Paul undertakes commissions. Recent commissions have included an anthem for the RSCM Ripon & Leeds Area Festival held in Ripon Cathedral (2014), a fauxbourdon setting of the Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis for the choir of St Giles Church in Durham (2015), an anthem the choir of St Cuthbert’s Church in Norham which was sung at a service marking the 850th anniversary of the church (2015), a new setting of the Common Worship Order One eucharistic texts for the Ripon & Leeds RSCM Choir Festival (2016), and an anthem for Derby Cathedral Choir which was sung at a service in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday (2016).
